On Monday morning when Kelly was getting the kids in the car to go to daycare, Thomas told her that there was a dog on the porch that looked like Taffy. She was in a hurry to get the kids to daycare and be to the hospital in time to feed Karly (those nurses in the NICU don’t mess around and if your 5 minutes late you have committed a major crime) so she didn’t stop to look at what he was talking about. So, when we arrived home Monday evening there was a dog sitting on our porch that looked just like the dogs (Taffy and Buddy) that Kelly and I had growing up. He was dirty and very smelly. He had poop and leaves stuck in his tail. You could tell that he had been out for sometime and he didn’t have a collar on. Noelle overhead my conversation with Kelly about how much the dog looked like Buddy and from that time on the kids were calling him Buddy. He was a great dog. He just sat at our sliding glass door and didn’t make a peep. It was hot so we gave him some water and Noelle couldn’t resist so he got plenty of dog treats too. We had to leave to run an errand and he ran right to the car with his tail wagging and when I said “no” he just ran back to the door and laid down. Kelly and I thought in the middle of all of the ciaos in our house right now, what were we going to do with this dog. He had no tags and when we left for our errand we looked for signs and couldn’t find any about this little guy. So we left him on the porch and went to bed.
Tuesday morning when we got up Buddy was still sitting on the porch wagging his tail. Again we thought we do not have time for this! We have been on a tight schedule getting Thomas to swimming lessons and back and forth to the hospital every three hours to feed Karly. But Kelly being Kelly felt sorry for him because he was smelly and nasty. She decided that we a hour before we have to leave and that would give us enough time give him a hair cut and a bath. So we could take a picture and make a sign to put up in the neighborhood. Since we lost Indy in January we know exactly how it feels to have lost a dog and have no idea if you will ever get them back.
After his bath we left him on the porch with some food and water and left to get the things done what we needed to. While driving a couple blocks from the house I saw a sign on a stop sign and it had a picture of him. Now he was no longer Buddy but Spike. When we got home I called the number on the paper and a lady answered the phone. I told her that we had her dog and she was in tears and very very grateful to have received the call. A few minutes later she drove up and Spike went running to her. She said that she had taken him to the vet a couple of weeks ago and forgot to put his collar on and the gardeners left her gate open and he got away over a week ago. Who knows how he got so far or why he picked our house to come to but in that moment it felt really good to have the opportunity to make someone's day. She said that they bought the dog for her son when he turned 2 and now he is 14 has been really upset that his dog was gone.
As I said in another one of my posts, our family has been blessed over the last couple of weeks by friends, co-workers and even strangers praying for our family and especially Karly. We have had meals brought to us and lots of kind deeds that we will never be able to repay and this was one opportunity for us in the mist of all of our ciaos to do something nice for someone else!!! The best part was when Thomas said “Heavenly Father is probably really proud of us for giving the lady her dog back, huh Auntie.” priceless!!!!
