Teaching compassion during the holidays

The last couple of years my Mom has been having the kids hand out cards to all the residents at a skilled nursing facility. Since she works for a company that contracts with different facilities she calls the facility and talks with the administrator to get permission and then gets all of the residents names. The kids sign their names and address the card and seals with a Christmas sticker. The kids look forward to it and enjoy going to the facility to hand them out.

This year we went to a facility near Kelly’s house. The kids put on their holiday headgear and headed into the facility. We went to each room and personally handed each resident a card and wished them a Merry Christmas.

The residents were so happy to receive the card and to see the kids. Some had family members there visiting and thanked the kids for coming and putting a smile on their loved ones face. One man even asked Hope for a high five which she was happy to do.

I’m so happy that throughout the Christmas season the kids have had several opportunities to do service and each time they had fun doing it. I think it’s important to teach them that the holiday isn’t just about receiving presents but being kind and thoughtful to others.
